Conservatives Demand No Tax Hike as Part of Entitlement Reform

Although the federal deficit dropped from its all-time high of $413 billion in 2004 to $258
billion last year, U.S. Comptroller General David Walker testified to the Senate Budget Committee
last week it dropped only because of the Social Security surplus.

Conservative tax strategists convened on Capitol Hill earlier this week to give the President a
firm message: Secure entitlement reform without a tax increase.
